As for the prize, use something desirable.  Keep an eye out for special wholesale buys you can use as prizes.  Go to your neighboring business owners and ask them to contribute something in exchange for you mentioning them in your advertising. If it is a restaurant, they could give you a coupon for a free meal for instance.  They already know people will not usually eat alone and will bring someone with them to eat.  They would probably break even and have a chance for this customer coming in more and more.  Consider, also, service businesses such as carpet cleaning or oil changes.  The sky’s the limit.  Make the prize have a high perceived value!

Going back to checking your numbers, let’s assume you are closing out fertilizer for the season.  Fertilizer is in your Lawn and Garden department.  What is the average sale in your Lawn and Garden department?  Figure that out and bump your required transaction to a realistic level for customers to earn extra chances to win.

The reason the average sale is looked at is because there is an implicit amount people generally at your business. If you set the bar too high, they will feel defeated and not do it.  On the other hand, if you make it too easy then you may not move as much inventory as you wanted.
