Ominous Warning To Motivate Your Marketing

A couple days ago I spoke with Al Norman who was featured in a 60 Minutes segment back in 1995 for being an anti-Walmart guy.  He and his town in Greenfield, Massachusetts kept out Walmart for a long time.  Their secret weapon?  Besides hard work, it was zoning laws.  Basically, as long as the town could keep Walmart from building a store because they couldn’t comply with zoning, Walmart was out.  Al spoke all over the U.S. to help other towns do the same.

 

Yet, there’s a creeping monster that’s not so new but is formidable.  Amazon.com

Alana Semuels from The Atlantic, just did a story on the very thing I’ve been warning business owners AND consumers about for quite some time.

Alana covers key issues like how people shop from Amazon who would rather not drive far away to get to a Walmart because Amazon offers free and fast shipping for basic needs which takes business away from local merchants.  She also notes how zoning laws cannot keep out Amazon like it did Walmart and thus, new ideas are needed.   Also, 90 percent of independent retailers say that Amazon is having a negative impact on their business, according to a survey of 850 businesses in 2017.

Here’s the sobering part…and what I’ve been preaching.  If the money spent by consumers goes to companies far away, the local economy suffers because less money is now in that economy. Money spent in a local business generates four times the direct local economic benefit than money spent at a chain store like Walmart – this is in terms of pay to employees, donations to charities, spending by employees, etc.  Think what happens with a community’s tax revenue.  It declines with chain stores, naturally.  Yet, buy stuff out of town (like from Amazon) and there’s a dramatic downward shift in tax revenue for communities.  Plus, who’s going to sponsor the local baseball teams, girl and boy scouts and parades as local merchants drop off the map?
